The Amsterdam Dungeon is a fusion of exhibits and live action based around 11 live shows. The whole tour takes around 1 hour and 20 minutes and takes in many of the most horrific times in Amsterdam’s history, from the plague to the Spanish inquisition and beyond.
You will be taken through the dungeon in a group of 30 guests so that you are assured that you will get to see each show in it’s entirety. There are scenes from the different parts of Amsterdam’s darker history played out by professional actors along the way to make sure that you do not miss any of the grizzly details.
Although the subject matter is dark it is presented in a very entertaining way. There are no serious scares and you will laugh as well as let out the occasional scream. The dungeon is laid out as a series of rooms and as you finish viewing each part you go on to the next.
The actors are very good and interact with the audience in both Dutch and English. It is not all just watching, some of the group will be chosen to join in with the executioners and torturers. usually much to the delight of those that were not chosen. Do not worry if you do not wish to join in, there is no obligation.
The stage sets and equipment that is used is high quality and very appropriate to the times in which they are set. In the torture chamber there are numerous scary implements, and a surprise waiting for one of the male guests.
There are also equally gruesome exhibitions on the great plague, the Spanish inquisition, how locals in Amsterdam were taken by “press gang’s” and forced to work on ships from the Dutch East India Company as well as demonstrations of surgery at sea.
One of the highlights is the “labyrinth of mirror’s” based on the old Amsterdam streets. At the end there is, as if to blow the cobwebs away, a ride on a roller coaster that goes around a real thirteenth century church.
The Amsterdam Dungeon is open every day of the week from 11:00 until 17:00. with slightly altered times around Christmas and new year.
The Dungeon is located at : The Amsterdam Dungeon, Rokin 78 1012 KW Amsterdam. It is a 5 minute walk from Dam Square, and a 15 minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station.
