The City Museum Almelo (Stadsmuseum Almelo in Dutch) is a museum that is located in the historic Rector House in Almelo. The museum lets you see the history of the city, formerly the Heerlijkheid Almelo (a Heerlijkheid is an old form of government in the Middle Ages). Besides the permanent collection, the museum also has some changing temporary exhibitions which are always clearly mentioned on their website. The museum is operated by the foundation ‘Stichting Museum voor Heemkunde Almelo’.
The collection of the City Museum Almelo focuses on the period 1880-1960. The collection can be divided into the following categories: objects, audiovisual, paintings, documents, textiles, postcards and coins & medals. The category of objects is the most comprehensive collection and contains objects such as textilestamps and old tools of various occupations. In the coin collection you’ll find hundreds of coins, one even dates back to the 14th century.
