Museum Gevangenpoort (Prison Port) in The Hague is a medieval prison that has a museum located in the building since 1882. The Gevangenpoort was the prison of ‘Hof van Holland’ from 1420 till 1828 and imprisoned criminals that commited a serious crime to wait for their sentence. the sentence could be a fine or a corporal punishment (confinement as a punishment was not done before the 17th century). The Gevangenpoort is among the Top 100 of the Dutch UNESCO monuments.
