The IJ Brewery in Amsterdam

The IJ Brewery (in Dutch: Brouwerij ‘t IJ) in Amsterdam is a small microbrewery producing organic beer, housed in an old windmill called De Gooyer, a national monument and the tallest wooden mill in the Netherlands. The original structure was built in the 16th century whilst the brewery was opened in 1985 along others small breweries that opened in Netherlands in response to the larger companies producing beers. The founder was Kasper Peterson. Drinking and producing beer have a very long tradition in the Netherlands. People like the small brewers and will certainly advice you to visit The IJ Brewery, Gulpen, Bavaria, Drie Ringen or Leeuw.

Beers and tours

The IJ BreweryIn the IJ Brewery they produce beers such as Zatte, Natte, Ijwit, Columbus or Struis. Natte, for example, is the oldest beer from this brewery. It is a dark beer with a reddish color and roasted flavor. The alcohol percentage in these beers varies but most of them are around 8 %. There is also the limited beer addition for all the beer lovers including Porter, Flamingo I.P.A. or VLO. The last one won a silver medal at the Brussels Beer Challenge. The latest addition to the beer family is the Flink beer, a blond beer with only 4,5 % alcohol. The bar next to the mill offers all the beers produced in the Brouwerij ‘t IJ that can be accompanied with various meals and snacks. It features one of the biggest beer bottle collections too. The bar is opened every day from 2 to 8 pm.

Visitor information

The brewery offers weekends` tours. There is a tour in English at 3.30 pm and another in Dutch at 4 pm. They both last about 30 minutes. The cost is 4.50 Euros per person. The tour includes a free beer whilst the maximum number of people on each tour is 25. Unfortunately you cannot book it in advance.  The group tours (including 25 people with the cost of 60 Euros in total) are scheduled on Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday at 3 pm and can be booked in advance. The easiest way to get to the Brouwerij ‘t IJ is by bus number 22 from the Central Station or by tram number 10 from the city centre. Another interesting way of getting there is by boat. The brewery is situated at the junction of Nieuwe Vaart and Mauritskade.
