The Nelson Mandela Bridge in Zoetermeer is a bridge for cyclists and pedestrians that connects the United Nations Square with the Boerhaavelaan street. It crosses the highway A12 and two train tracks and it goes under the building called ‘Port of Zoetermeer’. Reason for building the bridge was the Floriade horticulture exhibition in 1992. The number of visitors expected for the exhibition would be too much for the current bridge so architect J. Bak designed this roofed bridge. The colors used are the colors of the weapon of Zoetermeer. For security reasons the bridge is protected with security camera’s.
