Thialf - Heerenveen

Thialf is a large ice arena in Heerenveen, Netherlands. It is primarily used for short and long track speed skating, ice hockey, figure skating and some non-sport events. The indoor stadium opened in 1986, but the outdoor rink opened to the public in 1967. Named after Thor’s servant, the stadium hosts two major Speed Skating World Cup events and can accommodate up to 12,500 spectators.

Skating

There are four skating tracks at Thialf:

  • A 30×30 meter track
  • A 330-meter track
  • A 30×60 meter track
  • A 400-meter track

Adjacent to the skating tracks is the ice hockey arena. Another skating hall allows for figure and leisure skating.

The Unis Flyers play all of their home games in the Thialf ice arena. The official game schedule and tickets to games can be purchased online.

Skating School

Thialf - Heerenveen - buitenkantIf you are new to skating or simply want to improve your skills, you can enroll in the Thialf skating school. There are classes for every skill level and age.

  • Children skating: Children are classified by level and children are placed into groups of up to 14. A professional skating instructor will teach skating exercises and techniques to teach kids the basics and improve their skills. Classes are held on Mondays and Thursdays on the 333 meter track. Wednesday lessons are held in the hockey arena.
  • Adults 16 and older: Classes for adults are available throughout the week. Each participant will be grouped with others of the same skill level and the instructor will tailor the lessons and exercises to this skill level.
  • Family Skating: Make your skating lessons a family affair. Family skating lessons allow parents and their children to learn together. These classes are held on Wednesday and Friday each week.

Skating Clinic

Learn the basics of skating, including skating posture, sliding skating and how to glide on one leg, from a professional instructor. Clinics often include hot beverages and snacks.

Skate Rentals

At the Skater’s Corner in the hall of Thialf, you can rent a pair of skates for figure skating and/or hockey. The cost to rent is just € 6,95. Those with their own skates can have their blades sharpened here as well. Other skating related items can also be purchased.

Visitor Information

The latest information on opening times and fees can be found at thialf.nl. Businesses can host business presentations and other events at the stadium by renting out one of the meeting rooms onsite. Special packages and rates are available for corporate rentals.
